ENG Lens Repair You Can Count On

Electronic News Gathering lenses are among the hardest-working optics in the industry. Shot in the rain, on dusty rooftops, in salt air, under time pressure — ENG lenses endure conditions that no other professional lens faces so routinely. When something goes wrong, you need a repair service that understands broadcast production timelines and the precision these lenses demand.

Our technicians have deep experience with the full range of ENG and EFP lenses from Fujinon and Canon — the two dominant manufacturers in broadcast news. We work to manufacturer specifications, use approved lubricants and genuine parts, and test every lens in our HEPA-filtered clean room before it leaves the facility.

We serve TV stations, network affiliates, news agencies, documentary filmmakers, and production companies across the USA. Whether you’re shipping a single lens or maintaining a fleet, we can help.

What Is an ENG Lens?

ENG vs EFP vs Broadcast Box Lenses

ENG (Electronic News Gathering) lenses are compact zoom lenses designed for shoulder-mount cameras used in news and documentary production. They offer wide zoom ranges, built-in servo control for focus and zoom, and robust mechanical construction for field use.

EFP (Electronic Field Production) lenses are a step up — larger, with wider apertures and longer zoom ranges, used for sports, events, and studio production. We repair both.

Box lenses (studio/field zoom) are the largest broadcast format. We repair those too — see our broadcast lens repair page.

Common Problems

ENG Lens Faults We Fix

Field use causes specific, repeatable failure patterns. Here are the most common ENG lens faults we repair — and what causes them.

Back Focus Drift

The most common ENG complaint. The lens loses sharp focus at long focal lengths after impact, heavy use, or a mount change. We recalibrate flange focal distance to factory spec.

Servo Motor Failure

Zoom and focus servo motors wear out over time, producing erratic, sluggish, or unresponsive servo movement. We replace motors and recalibrate servo response curves.

Zoom Demand Issues

Erratic zoom speed, dead spots, or non-linear response in the zoom demand handle — usually a worn potentiometer or cable fault. See our zoom demand repair page.

Moisture & Rain Damage

Salt spray, rain, and condensation cause corrosion and fungal growth inside lens elements. We restore moisture-damaged ENG lenses in our clean room environment.

Sand & Dust Contamination

Grit inside the focus or zoom mechanism causes grinding, stiff operation, or optical degradation. Full teardown, ultrasonic cleaning, and re-assembly in clean-room conditions.

Fungus & Mould on Elements

Fungal growth on glass elements causes soft, hazy images. We remove fungal contamination and treat glass surfaces — often restoring lenses considered write-offs.

Focus Ring Binding

Dry or degraded lubricant causes stiff, notchy focus ring movement. We re-lubricate helicoids with the correct broadcast-grade compound for smooth, consistent feel.

Iris / Aperture Faults

Sticky iris blades, oil-contaminated aperture, or non-linear aperture control. We clean and service aperture assemblies to restore accurate, smooth iris operation.

Impact Damage

Dropped or struck lenses may have shifted optical elements, bent lens barrels, or damaged mounts. We assess impact damage and restore alignment where possible.
